On July 7, Planned Parenthood filed suit in federal court in Boston, contesting a tucked-in provision of Congress’s recent reconciliation bill that halts Medicaid reimbursements for the organization’s clinics for a full year. The suit characterizes the measure as a de facto ban on care—not just abortion, but essential health services.

More than one million Medicaid recipients rely on Planned Parenthood annually for services ranging from contraception and STI testing to cancer screenings and prenatal care. The lawsuit argues that denying reimbursements would force some 200 clinics to close, especially in states that depend heavily on Medicaid.
