Hey Small Biters,

In moments of national tragedy, the presidency comes with a singular responsibility: to speak not for oneself, but for the country. The president alone possesses the moral megaphone to steady the public, to express grief, and to offer a measure of unity. On this morning, Donald Trump chose instead to use that megaphone to center himself.

Following the apparent murder of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, Trump posted a message on Truth Social that stunned even seasoned observers of his rhetoric. Trump did not offer condolences in any recognizable form. Instead, he mocked Reiner, derided his politics, and suggested—without evidence—that his death was somehow a consequence of criticizing Trump.

Trump Blames Rob Reiner For His Own Death In Truth Social Post

The post described Reiner as “tortured,” “struggling,” and afflicted with what Trump calls “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a phrase he frequently deploys to dismiss critics. Trump implied that Reiner’s political opposition provoked rage in others, then closed with a jarring and perfunctory “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

The cruelty of the message was compounded by what is known about the case. Authorities have arrested the Reiners’ younger son, who has spoken publicly about struggles with addiction and homelessness. There is no credible reporting connecting the deaths to politics. Trump’s insinuations, therefore, appeared not just offensive but unmoored from reality.
